Information checked as of 3 September 2026, 20:10 CEST (UTC+2). A retrospective assessment of June, July and August in metropolitan France; not a current weather warning.
France has completed its hottest summer in the series beginning in 1900. Today’s news is the release of the report, not the start of a new heatwave. The official announcement dated 2 September scheduled its presentation for the following day in Saint-Mandé.
What the figures show
Météo-France’s summary, published on 3 September, reports a mean temperature of 24.0 °C and 53 heatwave days spread across three episodes.
The full report puts the rainfall shortfall at around 40% and describes exceptional soil dryness. Rain in the second half of August brought uneven improvement, insufficient to restore normal conditions on a lasting basis.
A 24 °C average does not describe a particular afternoon
A seasonal average combines many places and times, including both day and night. It does not mean thermometers stayed at that value for three months or that every city experienced identical heat. Nor is it a maximum temperature.
A purely mathematical example: the values 18 and 30 average 24. So do 23 and 25. The same average can hide very different variations; these are not observations from the French summer.
Rainfall needs similar care. A 40% shortfall means receiving approximately 60% of the reference amount, not having 40% fewer rainy days. Against a hypothetical reference of 100 mm, that would be 60 mm. These amounts are not being assigned to a real location.
Impacts: distinguish the assessment from damage totals
The report links hot, dry conditions to increased wildfire danger. This does not identify what started each fire. A meteorological description cannot by itself establish financial losses or casualties; this article does not provide unverified damage figures.
To read any climate report accurately, retain three labels: area, period and variable. A national figure does not automatically describe a municipality; a three-month total is not a single day; soil moisture is not the volume of water in a reservoir.
What to check now
If travelling in France, consult Météo-France’s official Vigilance service and local instructions. This article does not assign warning colours or predict when the next rain will arrive.
Our guide to meteorological and astronomical seasons explains why September already belongs to meteorological autumn even when it remains hot. For an outing, use a forecast for the actual location and time, not the headline of a national seasonal report.
